HORSE EXPERIENCE & HISTORY

At age 7, I realized I couldn't own a REAL unicorn, so I settled for horses. My poor, non-horse crazy parents let me ride any rental I could find, and when there was none, I just improvised by pretending to be one!! After many years of being told by my Mom and Dad, just how much work they were, I was still able to convince my Dad to buy me my first one - a purebred Arabian mare, and its been a blessing ever since! As I got older and taller, I went from Arabians to Paints, showed at the world level, and then on to quarter horses. I've ridden, trained, and worked for some talented people in the business, like Fred Tabor, Kristen Hertsgaard, and Alan Inks, taking a break later to raise two sweet baby girls.

When I'm not riding, I'm teaching my girls, chauffering them to all of their activities, leading 4H projects, and volunteering at my church, while the hubby is working away in the Texas Oil Patch.

My oldest daughter Hannah is now starting to share the love and blessing of owning and showing horses in Leadline Classes and it's helped her post-brain surgery therapy immensely! Horse riding is awesome rehabilitation for motor skills . My youngest is showing some interest too. Boy, Dad's in trouble having THREE horse crazy ladies!!

FUN FACTS

- We breed Holland Lop rabbits for 4H kiddos.

- I've lived all over So Cal from Temecula all the way up to Moorpark, having shown at a ETI 118 show in 1998!

- And my parents were totally wrong!!! -- KIDS are way more work than horses!!

HORSE EXPERIENCE & HISTORY

I was born and raised into horses. Since I was a baby, my Mom and Dad both had horses together. My first horse's name was Windy Lou. She was the whole reason I fell in love with what I do today. Horses are my life. I couldn't imagine my life without them.

HORSE EXPERIENCE AND HISTORY

I started riding horses when I was 2 years old. My Aunts had horses, however, my parents were not horse owners but have always been supportive of our horsey hobbies. I used to spend my summers in Las Vegas riding my Aunt's palomino, "Taffy", around the desert. I ended up buying my first horse, "Kiko's Apache Tears", at the age of 13. He was a nine month old appaloosa stud colt that had never had a halter on his face. I ground broke him myself, saddled, bridled, and lunged. I did everything short of riding him. I took a short break from horses in order to finish cosmetology school to become a licensed hair dresser. I obtained my first miniature, "CD", that led me to owning a small herd of five miniature horses. Shortly after, I started showing them at ETI 118 horse shows in various halter classes as well. Now, I focus most of my attention on my daughter, Kenzie, who has now been showing since the age of 3. She has shown "Lucy", our 27" mini mare. In 2017, Shelly Freed offered Kenzie the opportunity to show her horse, "Don't Touch My Tux", aka Eli, to show in Leadline Classes. Kenzie is a natural horsewoman, and has an enormous love for the animal. Now she owns her own miniature horse, "Perfect Storm", aka "Bodie". As a mother, I am excited to watch my daughter flourish and grow in the world of horses with Bodie, her partner in crime.

HORSE EXPERIENCE & HISTORY

Though I am from California, I also grew here and in Arkansas. My grandparents owned a huge ranch farm in Arkansas. I began riding at age 5. Starting off on a pony which didn't last long at all till I was on the horses. We had many horses. My family was very much into horses and riding. We often did long rides with my family riding many miles in a day leaving in the morning and coming home at night joining with many fun riders and different horses. We had ranch horses but the horse focus quickly changed to gaited horses and Tennessee Walkers. I did not really care except that it was a horse and I wanted to ride it. I cherish those years and the fond memories of the farm. We often moved back to California to live, eventually staying. I continued to visit my grandparents during the summers and they would always find me a horse for the summer. (once was an ol'logging horse) Entered many gymkhana events with my summer friends. As high school began, I stayed in California, I got a Quarter/ Arab buckskin mare. She was fun and I rode her all over Chatsworth where we lived. Later the horse turned into a hot rod. LOL! Then, after high school I got married. A couple years later, my parents got us all horses after buying horse property and for me my dream, a baby 4 mo. colt, named Sonny. He was my love. As he grew, I ground broke and later trained him to ride all on my own. Sadly, right when I did, I was forced to sell him. The husband and the horse were not a match. Words could never express the loss I felt forever more of giving this horse up. We had a bond like no other. Needless to say, I took a break from horses for about 25 years to be a Mom and had four children. Unfortunately, none of my children had an interest in horses so that did not help get me back into horses until my Grandmother passed. My loving Grandma had left me a little money. I thought long and hard about what to do with it. I always knew she wanted me to be happy. So, what would make me happy I thought. One day it came to me.... Horses makes me happy! That's it! I started the search and saw an ad for a horse named Dawson, a huge/tall ex-race horse. But I decided too that I would not buy only one horse thinking I could have someone to ride with perhaps MY FAMILY! So I bought him and then another. (Yep, much later, the family joined in, hence Eli!) Later, these horses changed to other horses. However, I had a halt. I had bought a bad one! Had a horrific accident and bed ridden. Months of recovery, doubtful I would ever ride again. After many months going good, I got a show horse. I showed with my Sis. I loved that so much. But the pain from the injuries returned. Had to sell and not ride. Ok I said, then I won't ride. So I'll get minis!!! I did, eventually 8 of them. I showed some and played with the others and rescued some along with my sister. Later, my desire to ride got the best of me but my injuries subsided. I sold the minis to find another horse, but I wanted it to be a Paint and a rescue. I searched and found my boy, Shane. Together we are my dream! We are not perfect but we are perfect together. I do not show horses anymore. It was not my passion. Trail riding is my dearest passion and I treasure it like people who show treasure showing. I treasure being out on the trails seeing places you can only see on the back of a horse, hearing nature, and the breath and hoof beats of my horse. Love it all!! Wouldn't want to trade it for anything. Thank you Grandma for my smile and my dreams. Thank you to my parents and my sis for your support and love.

Shelly Freed is my Sister. I put her here in Fun Facts because she is the one person I have the absolute most fun with and she's my best friend.

HORSE EXPERIENCE & HISTORY

Unlike most of you in our club, I was not raised with horses. It was not even on my radar. Until..... at the ripe old age of 53 some childhood friends who did have horses growing up talked me into going on a cattle drive! So, I found Chris Mayer and after 6 whole lessons with her on her wonderful horse, Cortez, off I went on the drive. Needless to say, I was scared to death the whole time, but I survived and came home with a desire to learn what I did wrong on the drive. (Which was just about everything!) That began 12 or so wonderful years of lessons once a week with Chris. Sure wish I could have ridden longer but who could have been luckier than me ... riding once a week on her wonderful horses. Of course my best boy was her beloved Dexter. This is a picture of me with Dexter taken just a few (ha ha) years ago.

I became involved with Corral 118 through Chris and said sure; I'll help out a bit. That was about 15 years ago. This will be my 9th year as Treasurer and I loved every minute of it. I love being around horses and horse people... they are the best!

HORSE EXPERIENCE & HISTORY

I WAS that horse crazed little girl. My uncle would give me money for ballet lessons and I would take the money and walk to the local barn and take a riding lesson (I grew up in the west end of the San Fernando Valley). Bought my first horse with my own money when I was 10 and have had horses ever since. Did not show as a child as we could not afford it. Actually got into showing as my daughter wanted to do leadline and it made no sense to prep, haul and pay for a horse to do just one class so I started showing. No trainer, my daughter Carly and I figured it out on our own. I just constantly tried to learn. I would read anything I could get my hands on and I would attend horse shows just to observe and ask questions. I have also been fortunate to ride as a demo rider for a variety of trainers including Julie Goodnight, Donna Snyder-Smith (an Olympics Coach), Richard Shrake and Chris Irwin. In addition, I would haul out and take lessons with Ashley Dunbar-Clock prior to her move to Texas. When Stacy Wight, SS Performance Horses, moved into the barn that I boarded at, I decided to up my game and work consistently with a trainer. I have tried a lot of disciplines; rode drill team as a teenager, competed in Trail Trials, and show Western and English. I am fortunate that I still can ride, and if you wonder why I only walk-jog it is because I had a severe horse wreck and have all 4 vertebrae in my neck fused with hardware in the front and in the back. I had a great neurosurgeon who is also a horse owner and understands the need to ride, just no cantering!

Truly though, my best horse experience had nothing to do with my showing. I was a volunteer and lent my mare Miss Gracie for the World Special Olympics that was held here in Los Angeles. It was the most exhausting, yet rewarding 10 days of my life. The participants were from all over the world and were incredible in their sportsmanship and loving nature. Miss Gracie won a number of medals including gold in Trail with Filip from Slovakia.

I am a firm believer in giving back and have volunteered as an ETI Board Member, Show Announcer, Chair of Convention, and Judge for Trail Trials. I want to encourage all riders to volunteer, you will earn some good "horseshow karma" by doing so!

HORSE EXPERIENCE & HISTORY

I first found my love for horses when I was 7 years old. My mom had been looking for fun summer things for me to do and she found a horse camp in Burbank. My best friend, Griffin and I started going to the Camp and I just fell in love with horses there. My Aunt Sophia had a friend down at Orange Park Acres that had horses on his property and when we would go down there on the weekends, I would sit out there for hours with them just hanging out. That's where I met Sherry Panttaja at Hoofprints Equestrian Program and took my first lessons. At Sherry's ranch I found my first love of a horse called Feather. My parents then decided we should try and buy a home in an equestrian neighborhood which is how we ended up in Old Agoura. That's when I met my current trainer, Angie LoCascio at Silver Lining Ranch. Angie introduced me to learning how to show horses and took me to my first ETI show in Oct of 2015. I rode Harley there (3D Vision) who carried me to my first blue ribbons. Needless to say, I was hooked. That's when my 2nd horse comes in to the picture. Angie and my Mom traveled all over looking for the perfect walk/trot horse for me and found Hot Roddin Johnnie. He took me to my first Pinto World Championship show where we were 3rd in the world in Horsemanship and we did many shows for 2 years together. I still have this awesome horse and now have a 2nd horse for moving up to loping and his name is Vinny (RU Ready to Reinvest). I am looking forward to this year with my new horse. Angie has been working so hard with Vinny and I and I can't wait to see how we do this year at ETI 118.

FUN FACTS

I was born in Santa Monica, CA and lived in Hollywood until I was 10.

HORSE EXPERIENCE & HISTORY

I started riding horses about 6 years ago. My friend in middle school brought me to her barn and I instantly fell in love with horses. About 3 years ago, I moved to R & R Ranch, my trainer, Lorraine, made me the great rider I am today. I am still learning more and more about horses each day. About 1 year ago, we found this spunky black Morab named Journey and I started riding her in my lessons. I connected with Journey instantly and love her more than any other horse in the world! She is my greatest teacher, always teaching me patience and how to work through the hard days without getting frustrated. Journey calms me down and she puts a smile on my face everyday! I did my first ever horse show with ETI and I have been loving it ever since. I also do Gymkhanas on Journey and we both have so much fun running together. We love to go on long trail rides, have fun lessons, and have nice cool baths after our lesson! I will forever embrace my love for Journey and horses in my heart!

FUN FACTS

Journey is a Morab which is a Morgan/Arab!

Journey is 21 years old but she has the energy of a 12 year old.

HORSE EXPERIENCES & HISTORY

My love for horses goes far back as I can remember. My parents didn't have the means to pay for horseback riding lessons so I was happy riding a rental string horse whenever the opportunity presented itself. Fast forward, it's now 2003, we are living in Hasley Canyon surrounded by horses. Although I was happy just seeing horses every day, it just wasn't enough so decided it was better late than never and I scheduled a riding lesson. I wasn't on this barn's "new" horse 2 seconds and I hit the dirt... left the ER with 12 staples in my head!

When my friend heard of the accident, she came to visit and said "I know of a horse you can ride ... his name is Bill." I was on his back before the staples were removed. Not too long after, Bill's owner decided she didn't have time for him and sold him to me. I credit Bill with teaching me how to ride (Mike Kavathas also had something to do with it)! In 2009, I showed Bill in Western Pleasure... I likened that to driving a John Deere tractor in a ballet! Shortly after that Belle (my little beast) came into my life. I first met Belle as a yearling. She came to me when she was 8 years and we have been showing at ETI shows, the Ventura County Fair and Goldmine ever since. I am so grateful for both of my B's ... and embrace every second that I have with them whether we are just hanging at the barn, trail riding or in the show pen!

HORSE EXPERIENCES & HISTORY

Unlike most little girls, I was not horse crazed. If it wasn't for my dad purchasing a Shetland pony for $50, I don't think horses would have entered my life. But when this pony named Fatty challenged me to stay on, the love began. I was then gifted a POA named Tiger Jane aka T.J. at the age of 13. She was my teacher. We showed for about 2 years and did very well. But, due to my saddle being stolen, I had to stop. I keep this mare until I graduated high school, and as many young adults going into the big world, sadly she was sold. I didn't get another horse until I was in my late 20's. However, I didn't return to showing until the past couple of years when I purchased A Natural Shi, aka Shi. This horse was my savior! He truly reignited my passion of horses and showing. Shi has now been retired and is living a "horsey" life.

I have been blessed to meet some wonderful people including Katie Wagner @ Katie Wagner Show Horses. With Katie's help, I have purchased a new mare Elegant Version Only aka Ella and have started in her amazing training program. I am truly looking forward to 2018 as our future looks bright.

FUN FACTS

Even though I live 2+ hours away from Simi, I did grow up in Simi from 1968 to 1981'ish. I was very excited to come home to the ETI 118 Club to show again. Although very different from my showing days with 118 at the Runkle Ranch, it was nice to come home.

Another fun fact, I was reunited with Danny Donovan who is also a horsey guy from Simi. We were family friends for many years and hadn't seen each other for about 30 years. We now love our life together showing and enjoying our animals.

HORSE EXPERIENCES & HISTORY

The first time I was on a horse was when I was two years old. Then, when I got older, my grandma, Pam Bethards, taught me everything I needed to know about riding. She eventually had me start riding Sparky, the horse I have been riding on. After I got comfortable riding him, my grandma had me take lessons with June Tabor, to learn some reining. My horse and I have both excelled from there. After taking lessons from June, she told me about ETI Corral 118 shows. I automatically wanted to do it. The first time I started showing in ETI was in 2017 and I hope I will be able to participate in many more.

HORSE EXPERIENCES & HISTORY

Born into a horse family, it was inevitable I would also join the love of horses. Started off with trail riding on rental horses with my sister who insisted I learn to ride and love horses too. Later, in my youth my family bought horse property and my parents gave us horses for Christmas. The journey began. Started with great all around backyard horses and progressed my skills and horses along the way. My showing days really began as a preteen with C.H.E.C. and ETI. Won my first saddle at Simi Valley Days in 1986. Blessed with many successes, a very supportive family and some fantastic show horses, I began training with some of the best Tim Whitney, Maggie McHugh, and Johnny Higginson. Also showed W.H.E.A. and a big Quarter Horse Show at Earl Warren Fairgrounds. These years were my foundation and I met great friends I still have today. At 16, I took a 26 year hiatus to finish school, marry and raise a family. Now that my kids are older, and I have a very supportive husband, my sister by my side, and supportive parents, I am back in! Mom and I searched for the right horse and flew to Oregon where we met Eli, a 4 yr. old dream horse. I continue to learn as much as I can perfecting my horse skills. ETI and Corral 118 have given me this opportunity to relive a dream I started many years ago. Having an encouraging family, a great horse and the Lord by my side, I am confident in the future ahead, looking forward to the next chapter of my horse show years with my so loved horse, Eli.

Ridiing and Showing in Texas since age 8. I started of with English and Jumping. Had extensive training in Dressage with a well known trainer at that time. I took a break to concentrate on family and got back into horses in 2005. I met Mike Kavathas, my trainer, at that time and have been showing ever since but now only showing Western.

FUN FACTS

I had a really big surgery last year and possibly more to come and I am not supposed to be riding. It's definitely my passion and makes me happy, and realized how much I missed it! I missed everything about it; waking up at 4:30am, all the hard work, the stress, my trainer saying this or that, the banding, the tails, Showsheen, hoof polish, fly spray, horses being longed, warming up, getting ready for their classes, the pretty outfits, and most of all just all my friends and getting to say Hi to everyone!

Pickwick "Saturday Night Jumps" in Burbank (before it was the L.A. Equestrian Center) as the place to be every Saturday night in the summer.

A horse I raised and trained from 6 months old was ETI Green Trail Champion in 1974. Horses became too expensive for a newly married so gave it up in 1974.

I then went off to pursue my flying career and left horses behind :(

My daughter Katie got me back into horses when she started riding around 7 years old and now as a 10 year old, she has about 1 1/2 years of showing under her belt. We recently purchased Preacher, her quarter horse, Hilda, a 2 year Quarter Horse that Katie Wagner is bringing up to be a show horse for us and I am also leasing Lollie so I have a horse to ride for now. She is a Quarter Horse that she and I have been showing the local shows and 118 together this year.
